The History of Tapas
La Tapa so as to be meaningful, has to be eaten between main meals as food that allows the body to survive until lunch or dinnertime.
Some authors assert that the tapa was born when, due to an illness, the Spanish king Alfonso the 10th, the Wise, had to take small bites of food with some wine between meals. Once recovered from the disease, the wise king decreed that no wine was to be served in any of the inns in the land of Castile, unless accompanied by something to eat. This was a wise precaution to counteract the adverse effects of alcohol on those people who, through lack of money to buy a
nourishing meal, drank alcohol on an empty stomach.
Apart from the story of the royal disease we should consider the theory that the tapa first appeared because of the need of farmers and workers of other unions to take a small amount of food during their working time, which allowed them to carry on working until time for the main meal. Some thoughts about the British Street Food Award
Very early this year we have decided to participate in the British Street Food Award.
We have filled the form, have selected the categories Best main Dish and best of the Best, hand have waited for responses.
Nothing…. At the end of August we have contacted the organizer by Email after we have seen the final line up.
How has this line up came together?
good question … I think our clients should have had to go to their web page to vote for us.
Who’s collecting the most votes during the year comes to the final ….it seems to be so, because this organizer never have got in touch with us, nor somebody has turned up to visit us.
Hmmm, our conclusion, if you have hundreds of friends it’s easy to reach the final lineup. Also we are thinking about the possibility for the 2012 Award putting up a laptop in front of our pitch with high speed internet connection, so our satisfied clients can vote directly (1 slice Spanish tortilla, 2 portions cod dumplings and a 20% discount, if you give us a positive vote).
On the other side we are not sure if its worth to compete against pizzas, pork hog roast or salted beef.
Surf and Turf, Instant Shelters, the cameleon canopy
Exactly 11 months ago we have bought our new black canopy (gazebo) from Surf and Turf in Lancashire nearby Warrington.
We have selected the strongest. the PROTEC 1, to go sure, that it lasts very long
Nice black, with our own designed branding decorated.
We have been absolutely impressed about the strong frame and the canopy has looked so nice, and everybody on the market has admired our new look.
Our new canopy first market day;

So nice, that posted in the Surf and turf gallery

Now 11 month later our euphoria has nearly completely gone.
Well the frame is still the strongest we have found on the market, but the sheet material is the worst we have ever seen.
The nice black colour has completely changed to a light grey at the top sheet, something for us absolutely not understandable.
11 months – in reality only 8 months exposed to the so sunny English elements and a complete fade out of the top sheet – for us wasn’t normal.
11 Months later:

So we have put of the top sheet and have visited Surf and turf – instant shelters.
The explication of their after sale service has convinced us to get the problem solved .
“Our after sales service is second to none, we offer help, advise and most importantly a full range of spare parts for all our products”.
Over all it was our lucky day, arriving at the destination we have had the owner directly in front of us.
He captured directly the problem. We told him, that the canopy is only 11 Month and not as it seem 5 years old.
Surprising answer : “And?”.
We expressed a little bit clearer our problem, that it isn’t normal for us, that a canopy has this fade out after only 11 months or 8 months work.
Answer: I every time recommend NOT to buy a black canopy.
Again we have expressed, that the canopy is only 8 months old, and that it is not normal, because we know others on the markets with black canopies and these canopies after 5 years are still black.
Answer: My canopies not, they fade out, that’s normal for my canopies.
Conclusion: black gets light grey, red to old baby rose, dark blue to baby blue … and so on.
Should be we have not this sense of humour, or we are strange people taking to much care about our image.
Should be, having a camelion canopy brings the real success to our business.
But I think we are to old fashioned to go this step.
So our first idea to have a long lasting canopy we have thrown to the bin and next year we will buy 2 new shiny black canopies. But this time we will ask if the colour will be more resistant against the so heavy burning British sun.
